Health Issue #13 Football and Chiropractic

footballFootball players of all ages, from youths to professionals utilize Chiropractic because it is a drug-free way to better health and performance. Chiropractic adjustments help ensure that the body functions as efficiently as possible, which can maximize healing, ensure optimal recovery from all types of injuries as well as help in the prevention of injuries.

31 percent of NFL teams use Chiropractors in an official capacity as part of their staff and a full 77 percent of the trainers have referred players to a Chiropractor.
Stump, J, DC, Redwood, D, DC, JMPT, March/April 2002, Volume 25 – Number 3, The use and role of sport Chiropractors in the National Football League

“Performing at my best is important to me and should be to everyone. Getting adjusted regularly, along with practicing other good health habits, are all part of my goals, to win in life and on the field.”
AARON RODGERS
TWO-TIME LEAGUE MVP SUPER BOWL XLV MPV

“As long as I see the Chiropractor, I feel like I am one step ahead of the game.”
TOM BRADY
5X Super Bowl Champion

“I definitely try to get on a basis where I use Chiropractic at least twice a week. I would definitely say it helps me to perform at a higher level.”
EMMITT SMITH, NFL Hall of Fame

“Do I believe in Chiropractic? Let me answer it this way. I’ve sent over 30 of my teammates, including All-Pro quarterback Joe Montana to the Chiropractor. Because of Chiropractic, I have never missed a game in 8
years. What does that tell you about my feelings about Chiropractic?”
ROGER CRAIG, NFL 80’s All Decade Team

Health Issue #15 Spinal Surgery Research

Experts estimate that nearly 600,000 Americans opt for back operations each year. But for many, surgery is just an empty promise, say pain management experts along with many top surgeons. A new study shows that in many cases surgery can often backfire, leaving patients in more pain with as much as a 41 percent increase in the use of painkillers following spinal surgery.
NBC NEWS Carroll, L. Back surgery may backfire on patients in pain. NBC News. Oct. 2010

“No operation in any field of surgery leaves in its wake more human wreckage than spinal surgery on the lumbar discs. Many lumbar disc surgery patients are subjected to numerous operations, and after each operation, the patient is worse.”
ANTHONY DEPALMA, M.D.
Professor of Orthopedic Surgery

Complication rates for spinal surgical intervention in degenerative disc disease are as high as 55% and include hematoma, neurological adjacent segment degeneration, infection and hardware failure.
Deyo, R. Gray. D. Kreuter, W. U.S trends in lumbar disc surgery of degenerative conditions. Spine, 2005; 30(12)

DISC HERNIATIONS when dealt with in the first six months have better outcomes than discs that are not dealt with quickly.

There is a time and place for surgery, but conservative measures should always be exhausted first and the leading conservative approach is Chiropractic care.

42.7% OF WORKERS WHO FIRST SAW A SURGEON ENDED UP IN SURGERY, AS OPPOSED TO ONLY 1.5% OF THOSE WHO FIRST SAW A CHIROPRACTOR.

A study of 1450 pain patients, half of who underwent  spinal surgery, revealed that after two years, only 26 percent of those who had surgery returned to work. That translate to a resounding 74% failure rate.

Health Issue #9 Birth Trauma

birth traumaThe modern birth process, even under routine conditions, is frequently the first cause of vertebral subluxation. Due to the structure of the infant’s spine, spinal stretching from the birth process is more likely to result in
spinal cord trauma with nerve interference than in damage to the vertebral segments and soft tissue.

“Brachial plexus injuries follow stretching caused by shoulder dystocia, breech extraction, or hyper abduction of the neck in cephalic presentations. Associated traumatic injuries, such as subluxations of the cervical spine may occur.”

Beers, M, The Merck Manual, Disturbances in Newborns and Infants, 18th edition.

“Spinal cord and brain stem traumas often occur during the process of birth but frequently escape diagnosis, and infants often experience lasting neurological defects.”

Towbin, A. (1968). “Spinal Cord and Brain Stem Injury in Newborn Infants.” Developmental Child Neurology

Dr. Godfrey Gutman conducted a study of 1000 newborns shortly after birth. He discovered that over 80% had suffered trauma to their cervical spine region.

“Many birth injuries do not result in infant death but may still significantly affect the neurodevelopmental outcome.”

The earlier abnormal spinal function could be recognized and corrected in a child’s life, the greater the opportunity that child will have for neurological development.”
DR. DAVID HEILIG
Journal Am Osteopathic Assoc. 49;48-478-4

“Interference to the nervous system results in damage within a short period of time and therefore, Chiropractic care should begin at birth on a preventive basis.”
DR. ARPAD DENAGY, The Rockefeller Inst.

“Every newborn should receive a neck and spine examination and a Chiropractic adjustment if necessary. Is that idea too difficult to accept?”
LENDON SMITH, M.D., Pediatrician

Health Issues #8 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

carpal tunnelCarpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. Women are twice as likely to develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) as men. In 1973, a breakthrough study demonstrated that cervical spine problems increased the incidence of CTS, a concept referred to as “double crush phenomenon”.

90% of all carpal tunnel patients were found to have nerve root irritation in their cervical spine, a condition known as double crush phenomena.

A study in a British medical journal found evidence of cervical neuritis (nerve interference) in over 70% of all carpal tunnel syndrome patients.

A research project on 91 patients demonstrated that chiropractic was equally as effective in reducing CTS symptoms as conventional treatment, but without the sideeffect potential of ibuprofen on the stomach, liver, and kidneys.

38 CTS sufferers received chiropractic care. After treatment, results showed improvement in all strength and range of motion measures. Also, a significant reduction in pain and distress ratings was reported by all.
