Health Issue #2 Asthma & Chiropractic

asthmaAsthma is a common chronic disease worldwide and affects approximately 30 million people in the U.S., an estimated 7 million of which are children. The pathophysiology of asthma is complex and involves airway inflammation, intermittent airflow obstruction, nerve system dysfunction and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Americans spend over six billion dollars annually on asthma treatment and medications and lose millions in lost wages.

“Research has shown that an imbalance may exist in the nervous system that supplies the bronchial tubes of an asthmatic individual.”

The Asthma Sourcebook McGraw-Hill Hill 2001

“Abnormal autonomic nervous system responsiveness may contribute to the pathogenesis of asthma and other allergic diseases.”

Kaliner M, Shelhamer JH, Davis PB, Smith LJ
Autonomic nervous system abnormalities & allergy. 6(3):

“Physiopathic changes in spinal structures actuallyproduce an inhibition of nerve impulses. Subjective and clinical findings associated with this syndrome include severe asthma attacks and bronchial asthma.”

The viscerospinal syndrome. California Western Medicine, 38, (93)423-428

A study published in in a Holland Medical Journal reported that out of a group of 115 families with asthmatic children, 73% had utilized Chiropractic care for the asthma and 92% of the families reported that Chiropractic was beneficial for their children.

Health Issues #10 Running & Chiropractic

runnerRunning is one of the most common forms of exercise but with extensive exercise comes the risk of
injury. Runners of all types, from the casual jogger to an elite athlete, can benefit from Chiropractic care.

A study involving 17 middle distance runners showed that when Chiropractic care was performed on a treatment group, they showed significantly greater hip extension ability after Chiropractic care than did the control group.

Sandell, J. Palmgren,P. Björndahlc, L. Effect of chiropractic treatment on hip extension ability.

“Chiropractic is essential for running. If I could put a percentage value on it, I would say that I compete 8-10% better from regular Chiropractic.”

A Canadian research team included Chiropractic care in the rehabilitation program of sixteen injured female long distance runners. Not only did these runners recover quickly, but seven of them actually scored a “personal best” performance while under Chiropractic care.

Grimston, SK, Engsberg JR, Shaw L (1990) “Muscular rehabilitation Prescribed in coordination with prior Chiropractic as a treatment for sacroiliac subluxations in females.

A landmark research study evaluated the effects that Chiropractic adjustments may have on reaction times. There was a marked improvement for the group that received adjustments over the group that received nothing but rest. The group that received Chiropractic adjustments showed a decrease in reaction time of 97 milliseconds, representing a 14.8% faster reaction time.

Olympic Champion Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive, utilizes Chiropractic care not only to perform better but to prevent injury and maximize recovery from his intense training and competing.

“Being a full-time competitor means an increased risk of injury. At this level of competition, we have to make sure to take care of our entire body, and that includes the recovery of it; and so I visit a Chiropractor on a regular basis as part of my training.”

Health Issues #15 Pregnancy

baby in womb affect on woman's spineThe science of Chiropractic is founded on the premise that a properly functioning nervous system is the foundation of health, and that the structural integrity of the spinal column must be maintained in order to facilitate optimal nervous system transmission and communication. More women are discovering the many benefits associated with Chiropractic care during pregnancy as well as labor and delivery.

Biomechanical changes and stress to the neuromusculoskeletal system are present during and immediately after pregnancy. Chiropractic evaluation and care during pregnancy may be considered a safe and effective means of treating pregnant patients.

Borggren, C., “Pregnancy and Chiropractic: A Narrative Review of the Literature”. Journal Chiro Med. 2007 Spring; 6(2): 70–74.

57% of nurse-midwife responders recommended Chiropractic to their pregnant patients to address pregnancy related issues.

Mullin, L., Alcantara J., Barton D., Dever L. (2011) Attitudes and Views on Chiropractic

Dr. Irvin Henderson studied the effect of Chiropractic adjustments on labor and delivery reporting that women who received chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester were able to carry and deliver their child with much more comfort.

“Regular adjustments can make pregnancy less stressful and delivery less uncomfortable. Chiropractic care can continue safely until the day of delivery.”

“Encouraging regular Chiropractic and maternal self care increases a patient’s probability of a successful natural delivery.”

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide multiple benefits for women including:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy.
  • Controlling nausea.
  • Reducing the time of labor.
  • Reducing time of delivery.
  • Relieving back pain.
