Proper Posture: Do You Think It’s Important?

Do You Think Proper Posture is Necessary?

What can you say? You’ve probably been told by one of your parents, at some time early on, to sit up or stand up straight. To be concerned about proper posture is good advice, even if those older people didn’t look like they knew what they were talking about. I am always telling my patients that posture is really important, but then some ask me, “For what?” Let me give you a little insight on that today.

Proper posture helps prevent various pains and handle stressful situations.

If you’re facing a potentially stressful situation—perhaps a meeting with someone at work, for instance—standing or sitting up perfectly straight will prevent tension from taking over, reveals a new study in the journal Health Psychology.

The science: Proper posture triggers the production of something called epinephrine and norepinephrine (hormones that boost confidence, calmness, and clarity). As a result, if you sit up and stand up straight you will feel more in control and able to handle whatever may arise, which stops your body’s stress response!
