Posture, Mental Health, and Feeling Good About Yourself

I’m going to talk about posture today, but not in a way you’ve probably heard before. The reason I’m doing this today is because I want you to really understand the importance of having a good posture. A lot of people think that it’s is something that you only have when you’re young, but they’d be totally wrong if they think like that. Here’s where I’m going with this today.

Have you ever noticed the body language of someone who is depressed or feeling blue? You know, you can just look at them and tell that something is wrong or going wrong, and their body language is a tell-all indicator of their issues and drama. Well, believe it or not, your posture is the first thing other people can notice about you. If you don’t believe me, just walk around with your head and shoulders down and you’ll find out people will not want to be around you very long, especially if you’re depressed and complaining about everything.

Poor posture is something that is not only bad for you—it doesn’t look good. And if you do it on a regular basis, like a lot of people do, it can lead to a more depressed mental state and feelings of lethargy. Yes, that’s what I said: if you’re depressed and you have bad posture it can lead to more and more depressed feelings, so it’s something that you want to take very seriously. You may have grown up hearing one of your parents or teachers say at one time or another, “Stand up straight, that looks terrible.”  Not only does good posture improve one’s appearance and air of confidence, but it can also boost your mood and overall wellbeing.

Too much texting can lead to poor posture and pain.

Here’s what I learned, just this week: Erik Peper, Ph.D., a professor at San Francisco State University, conducted an experiment to determine how posture affected a person’s ability to produce both positive and negative thoughts. It sounded kind of interesting, so I wanted to find out what he found out. What were his results? He found out that the participants who sat up straight (most of the time, especially during this testing) communicated that it was easier to summon and think about positive thoughts and memories when asked to do just that. That doesn’t surprise me, but it’s important that you know how important posture really is to you and your health, both physically and mentally. By perfecting—or at least trying to perfect—your posture, you can positively impact a lot of things: your attitude, your mental health (very important in today’s society), your energy level, and the way others treat you.

Here’s the important part. I want you to learn how to maintain your positive outlook with something really easy—regular chiropractic care. After all, I am a posture expert, so make sure I check your posture when you’re in the office on your next visit. It’ll pay off big time!
