Your Foundation is in Your Feet
One thing about foot health is the following: I’m not talking about your house when I’m referring to your foundation. If I were you might be a little more concerned, even though your bodily foundation is much more important to you and your longevity than your house. Most people don’t worry about prevention—just symptoms. Sad, but true.
But enough of that. Let’s talk about you and your bodily functions today. Have you looked at the heels on your shoes lately? How’s your digestive tract? If you care about yourself, take a minute and check out your heels. Are they too tall, too small, or just crazy to wear right now?
What you’ll most likely find is that you’re wearing down your heel differently on one side versus the other.
So why am I bringing this up to you today? Because I want you to stop what you’re doing and think about your foot health—your foundation—how it affects your health, and what that’ll mean to you in just a few short years.
You walk. You run. You wear shoes that don’t fit, but guess what—they look great, right? They look so good, and even though your feet are exhausted at the end of the day you figure that’s normal. Especially because of the kind of shoes you’re wearing. Unfortunately, your poor feet are just that—poorly taken care of and maintained. For some odd reason we expect our feet to get us from point A to point B forever, but we rarely consider the beating they take from carrying us around, even though we use automobiles to do most of the job.

Enabling Your Movement
Do you know how many bones you have in your feet? If not, go online and find out. I think you’ll be surprised. Our feet are complex structures that contain over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. One-fourth of your body’s bones, 52 in total (I just answered that question for you), are contained in your two feet. So much wrapped in such little packages! Paying attention to how they’re feeling and taking proper care of them on a daily basis is vital to your health and having a good quality of life in the future. Serious health complications can develop by ignoring your foot health and not giving them the care they deserve. I know it’s hard to believe that your feet could cause major health issues, but the truth is the truth.
Preventing Future Problems

Foot health is about much more than the pain they might be feeling.
Conditions such as plantar fasciitis and stress fractures (which can really hurt you for a long, long time) can develop if you neglect the structure of your feet. So, the $64,000 dollar question is, “What can you do about it?”
Wear Comfortable Shoes
That may sound silly, but standing or walking on softer surfaces (e.g. grass or dirt rather than concrete or stone) can help your feet immensely. Schedule an appointment to talk to me about your feet, or any other questions you might have about your health.
Improvements to your footwear can include wearing orthotics or some other arch support. These will help you absorb the shock your feet take and stabilize your foot’s structure.
Are Your Feet to Blame Or Are You?
Similar to the cracks in the wall or windows that don’t open and close easily due to a settling house’s foundation, many of your spinal problems may get their start from a poor foundation (feet). I understand trauma is a big one, as well as car accidents, but that’s another story for another time.
If you have issues with your foot health, bring it up with me on your next visit and we can help you decide what you might want to do to help your feet carry you around better, and get more stable as well. Call now if you’re having feet issues.
