Are You Suffering from Chronic Inflammation?

This is a short questionnaire about chronic inflammation. Answer a simple “yes” or “no” for each question; if you only have the problem occasionally, still answer “yes.”

  1. Do you feel stiff when you get up from sitting?
  2. Do your joints get sore when you move them?
  3. Do your hands ever feel stiff?
  4. Do any of your joints ever feel swollen?
  5. Do you have unexplained nasal congestion?

If you answered “YES” to any of these you really need to read this. What most people—and even most doctors—don’t know is that one of the major causes of pain comes from foods that you eat.Foods can contribute to chronic inflammation.

Treating Chronic Inflammation

Here’s what you should focus on removing from your diet:

  1. Sugar. This one is obvious. Nothing damages the digestive tract like sugar. The medical community is starting to agree on the fact that chronic inflammation often starts in your gut, the biggest part of your immune system.
  2. Alcohol. Alcoholic beverages damage your gut flora and liver when consumed in excess.
  3. Grains. Refined or not, grains are inflammatory. It’s even worse if you’re gluten-sensitive, as 10–15% (depending on the sources) of the world’s population is. The phytic acid and lecithins in grains are a problem for most people, even without allergies or intolerance.
  4. Refined vegetable oil. Canola, soybean, safflower, corn, and sunflower oils. Even though these oils are advertised as healthful and trans-fat-free, it turns out the heavy refining which they go through destroy the healthful fats and turn them into highly inflammatory byproducts. You should also assume that vegetable oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and corn oil are genetically engineered.
  5. Pasteurized dairy. 75% of the world’s population is intolerant to lactose. That’s because the pasteurization process destroys the healthy bacteria and enzymes in raw milk, and makes milk very hard to digest.

The good news about this is that even if you enjoy a frequent sugary indulgences or love milk, you don’t necessarily have to completely cut any of the above from your diet to see improvement (but it will absolutely help you more, and faster, as outlined by the above image); simply reducing your intake and keeping your body properly hydrated with water will help your body flush itself and at least decrease the severity of your inflammation. Just recognize that, ultimately, it may be necessary to end the relationship with your favorite food vices to heal properly.
